There is a kind of religion that looks busy and changes nothing, and there is the real thing. The Scripture draws the line plainly: pure and undefiled religion is caring for people in their affliction and keeping yourself unspotted from the world.
Notice what is missing — performance, appearance, noise. The real thing turns outward. And there is a mercy hidden in it for the person in recovery: serving someone else in their affliction is one of the surest ways God heals your own. You were not rescued only to be safe. You were rescued to reach.
When you are strong enough, find someone one step behind you on the road, and turn around.
