Humility has a bad reputation. People hear it and think weakness, or groveling. In recovery it means something far stronger: living without self-will running the show, and trusting that the One who lifts up is more capable than the one who is straining to elevate himself.
Step 7 is asking God to remove the shortcomings identified in Step 6. But the asking must be humble — not bargaining, not conditional, not asking while maintaining a corner of the defect for emergencies. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord.
In His sight means aware that He sees everything. The performance of humility and the substance of it are not the same thing, and He knows the difference.
He shall lift you up. Not you, straining. Not you, demonstrating enough improvement to earn it. He shall lift. The passive construction is intentional. The lifting is not your work.
This is the hardest part of Step 7 for people who have spent years managing their own image — to ask genuinely and then wait for God to do the work, without engineering the outcome.
Character defects that are removed by God do not leave a vacuum. They are replaced. The anger that leaves creates room for patience. The pride that is removed creates room for a teachable spirit. The fear that goes creates room for courage.
You are not asking to be emptied. You are asking to be exchanged — the defects for the fruit that God produces in a person who has genuinely humbled themselves before Him.
