By Step 6 you have seen what is in you. The temptation now is to grit your teeth and remove it by effort. But readiness is not effort. A clean heart is not something you scrub into being — it is something God creates.
Your part is to become entirely ready: to stop defending the defects you have been protecting, and to present the whole vessel to be cleared. His part is the actual work. He is the one who renews a right spirit within a person — you could not do it, which is exactly why He offers to.
Stop trying to be your own surgeon. Get on the table, and let the One who made you make you new.
“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”— Psalm 51:10
