Something stays in power as long as it stays a secret. Step 5 — admitting to God, to yourself, and to one trusted person the exact nature of what you have found in your inventory — is the step that breaks the power of secrecy once and for all.
James 5:16 says confess your faults one to another. Not just to God. Not just to yourself. To another person. There is something that happens in the presence of a human witness that does not happen in private confession. The shame that feeds on darkness cannot survive being spoken aloud to another person who does not turn away.
The secrecy is part of the bondage. Speaking it out loud in the presence of a trusted person is part of the breaking of it.
Step 5 asks for the exact nature of what the inventory revealed — not just the events, but the patterns. Not just what you did, but what was driving it. The resentment that became retaliation. The fear that became control. The wound that became a weapon.
The exact nature is what has been underneath the behavior. Naming it with another person present is what begins to remove its power over you.
The healing of Step 5 is not always immediate. But most people who complete it honestly describe a weight that lifts. Not because the past changed, but because the secret is gone. What was carried alone is now shared. What was hidden is now in the light.
James said pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The prayer that follows confession is not a formality. It is the completion of the step.
