We do not call it a sobriety date. We call it your recovery start date — the day you turned toward something different, the day you chose the walk over the weight. That day matters. What it is called matters too.
Sobriety as the goal reduces recovery to the absence of a substance. Recovery as the goal is something larger — the rebuilding of a life, the restoration of relationships, the renewal of a spirit that has been through something hard. The start date marks the beginning of that larger work, not just the cessation of a behavior.
Lamentations 3:22-23 says His mercies are new every morning. Your recovery start date is the morning His mercy became specific to you — the morning the turn happened. That is worth marking.
Mark it. Not to count days as the measure of your worth, but to have a reference point for what God has done. Every day after the start date is a day He has carried you. The count is not a score. It is a testimony.
When the temptation comes — and it will come — the date is evidence. He carried you through every day between your start date and today. He will carry you through this one too.
Then today can be it. His mercies are new every morning. Not just the morning you have chosen. This morning. This is the day the LORD has made. If you are reading this and have not yet turned, this is the invitation to turn. Mark today. Start counting. Let the count be testimony to what He does when someone turns toward Him.
