Came to believe only helps you if the God you believe in is real, specific, and able. A vague higher power you invent to fill a blank cannot reach into the darkest place of your history and pull you out. A concept cannot hear. A force cannot love. A principle cannot save.
Hebrews 11:6 requires two specific beliefs: that He is — that God actually exists, is actually present, is actually real — and that He rewards those who seek Him. Not a maybe. Not a possibility. A rewarder.
The God of the Bible spoke to Moses by name. He counted the hairs on your head. He knew you before you were formed. He is not an idea you hold. He is a Person who holds you.
Vague faith cannot sustain you through the 2 a.m. cravings. It cannot answer the voice that says you are too far gone. It cannot carry the shame of what the substance made you do. Only a God who is actually able — who is actually present, who actually intervenes, who actually hears — can do what recovery requires.
Step 2 is not asking you to become religious. It is asking you to believe in something specific enough to call on. Real enough to trust. Present enough to help.
The step says came to believe — past tense, describing a journey. You do not have to arrive at full faith before you take Step 2. You have to be willing to believe that the God who is described in scripture is real, and that He rewards those who seek Him.
That willingness is the door. He will meet you inside it.
